Rubber jointing has many different uses and is manufactured in a variety of grades. Choosing the right sheeting for the job is vital for performance and economy. When choosing a grade of rubber, consideration must be given to the environment in which the rubber compound is to work and the duty which it is expected to perform. Below you will find a general guide to the different elastomers available on the market today. |
- BUTYL
Can be compounded to give very low gas and moisture permeability, high resistance to ozone, weather, abrasion, tear, flexing, heat ageing and chemical attack. Can be used for applications requiring high shock absorption.
- EPDM
Can be compounded to give good - excellent abrasion resistance, ketone resistance, excellent resistance to low water absorption, acid resistance and resistance to animal & vegetable oils. Has outstanding resistance to ageing, weathering, ozone & oxygen. It has fairly low gas permeability. EPDM is not suitable for use with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, lubricating oil and petrol.
- NEOPRENE
Excellent acid resistance, good ozone and oxidation resistance, good flame retardants and resistance to lubricating oil and animal and vegetable oils. Not suitable for applications requiring resistance to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons & ketones.
- NITRILE
Excellent resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons, lubricating oils, and vegetables oils and petrol. Good abrasion resistance & compression set. Not suitable for use with ketones. Chemically known as Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber.
- NATURAL
Can be compounded to give high resilience, good tensile strength, good compression set, high tear strength, good abrasion resistance, excellent low temperature properties, excellent dielectric strength and fair to good resistance in concentrated & dilute acids. Not suitable for use with solvents including aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, lubricating oil and petrol.
- FLUOROCARBON (VITON)
Excellent heat & fuel resistance. Very low permeability to gases. Excellent ozone, oxidation and flame resistance. Not suitable for use with ketones and lacquer solvents.
|
SILICONES
Excellent electrical insulation. Resistant to animal and vegetable oils, diluted acids, ozone, water absorption and oxidation. Not suitable for use with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. |
